Unpaid autumn holiday

Employment relationship may include time when work and pay are temporarily interrupted during school holidays. In unemployment security, these periods are referred to as periods comparable to lay-off.

For a period comparable to a lay-off, you may also be entitled to earnings-related daily allowance if the employment relationship is full-time. However, unpaid holiday periods must be agreed upon already at the beginning of the employment relationship, and unpaid periods must be mentioned in the employment contract. If there is no mention, the right to earnings-related daily allowance cannot arise for periods comparable to lay-offs in full-time work.

Applying and paying the allowance

Earnings-related daily allowance can be paid for the period comparable to lay-off, either in full or adjusted, depending on the full-time or part-time nature of the employment relationship. Please note that adjusted benefits can also be paid if you have a part-time employment relationship alongside full-time work or if you have part-time business activities.

If you are unsure about your entitlement to benefits, we recommend that you submit an application to the fund so that we can check your entitlement to daily allowance. Please note that the validity of the job search is an absolute prerequisite for the payment of earnings-related daily allowance even in a situation comparable to a lay-off!

Unpaid autumn holiday in part-time employment

If your employment relationship is part-time, you have probably applied for adjusted daily allowance from the very beginning of the employment relationship. In this case, continue applying for earnings-related unemployment allowance according to your normal application rhythm (four calendar weeks or a month).

The salary paid during the adjustment period will be taken into account as usual for the entire application and adjustment period. However, if you apply for daily allowance only during the autumn holidays, the wages paid during the adjustment period (four calendar weeks or a month) will be taken into account in the payment of the daily allowance.

Unpaid autumn holiday in full-time employment

The right to earnings-related daily allowance can only arise for a period comparable to a lay-off, so you can only submit the application during an unpaid autumn holiday week. Submit the application for the entire calendar week (Mon-Sun). For example, if the unpaid autumn holiday according to the employment contract is between 16.-20.10.2023, submit the application for the entire calendar week 16-22.10.2023.

A prerequisite for entitlement to daily allowance is that unpaid periods are mentioned in the employment contract. Attach to the application your employment contract and a weekly hour report on the hours you have worked during the period prior to the unpaid holiday. You can submit a weekly hour report filled in by the employer, or you can fill in the report yourself. Weekly hour survey forms can be found on our website under Forms.(opens in new window)

Please fill in the weekly hours report carefully. The reported hours must match the wages paid. If there is a discrepancy between the hours marked and the hours paid, we may need to request further clarification to resolve the issue.

If you have a part-time job alongside a full-time employment relationship, submit an employment contract for that part-time job as well. The wages of part-time work are taken into account in the adjustment, i.e. the daily allowance for an unpaid holiday week is usually paid adjusted.
